Two of the most common escalation stories in romance scams involve a sudden windfall that needs help being unlocked, or a sudden crisis while traveling. Both are built to justify one urgent, specific payment rather than an ongoing pattern, which makes them feel more like a one-off favor than a scam.

The inheritance version

A partner reveals they're due to receive a large inheritance, settlement, or lottery-style windfall — sometimes from a relative in another country — but a customs fee, legal fee, tax payment, or bank release charge is required first. The amount needed is always small relative to the promised payout, which is the entire psychological hook: it feels like a safe bet to "unlock" a much larger sum.

The travel emergency version

This one typically arrives after a trip has already been discussed or is supposedly underway: a missed connection, a robbery, a confiscated passport, a medical emergency in a foreign airport, or being detained by local customs over an undeclared item. The location is usually somewhere that makes independent verification hard, and the request is framed as the only way to resolve an emergency happening right now.

Why the urgency matters more than the story

The specific plot varies, but the mechanism is identical: create a situation where waiting to verify feels cruel or irresponsible, and where the requested amount seems small next to the stakes described. Genuine emergencies involving people you haven't met in person are, unfortunately, not something you're in a position to verify or meaningfully help with from a distance — and legitimate government fees, customs charges, and legal costs are never paid by wiring money to an individual's personal account.

What to do

Treat any request tied to an unverifiable emergency abroad the same way regardless of how convincing the details are: don't send money, ask for a way to confirm the story independently (an official document, an embassy contact, a callable phone number), and recognize that a refusal or inability to provide any of that is itself the answer.
